One of the biggest worries moms have before their session is this:
“What if my baby won’t sleep during the newborn photoshoot?”
And I want to reassure you right away:
? It’s normal
? It happens often
? And it’s absolutely not a problem
I’ve been photographing newborns since 2007, and one thing I’ve learned is this:
Babies are little humans — not robots.
Some sleep beautifully during a session, and some stay wide awake. Both can create beautiful photographs.

Some of the most emotional and memorable images actually happen when babies are awake.
These moments often include:
• tiny stretches
• curious little expressions
• soft eye contact
• cozy swaddled moments
• that calm “just fed” look
Many parents are surprised to discover that they love these awake newborn photos just as much as the sleepy ones.
They feel real, natural, and full of personality.

When babies are awake during a session, we usually focus on:
• cozy swaddling so baby feels secure
• simpler poses that prioritise comfort
• capturing tiny expressions and eye contact
• natural, relaxed moments instead of complex posing
The result is often a more authentic and emotional set of images.
And honestly, real baby moments are often the most beautiful ones.

Newborn sleep is unpredictable. Babies may stay awake because of:
• growth spurts
• tummy discomfort or gas
• cluster feeding
• being naturally alert
• changes to routine (car rides, visitors, etc.)
So if your baby is wide awake, please know:
It is not because you did something wrong.
Over the years I’ve developed a calm, baby-led approach.
Here’s what typically happens behind the scenes:
There is no rushing a newborn session.
We take breaks whenever needed.
A full baby is a relaxed baby. Feeding breaks are always welcome.
Swaddling helps babies feel secure and comfortable and often allows us to capture beautiful images even when they’re awake.
My studio is set up to support newborn comfort with gentle warmth, soft light, and calming white noise.
Every newborn is different. Comfort always comes first.
While babies always have their own plans, these simple steps can help the session go smoothly.
• Try to keep baby awake for a short time before leaving home
• Feed baby just before the session or when you arrive
• Dress baby in something easy to remove (avoid tight vests)
• Bring extra milk or formula if needed
• Bring a dummy if you use one (no pressure if you don’t)

If you’re hoping for those classic sleepy, curled-up poses, the ideal time is usually:
7–14 days old
This is why many parents search for the best age for newborn photoshoots.
However, beautiful images are still absolutely possible when babies are older.
In those cases we focus more on:
• swaddled setups
• natural connection with parents
• tiny baby details
• awake expressions

Another common question is what parents should wear for their photos.
The safest and most timeless choices for moms are:
• a neutral top (white, cream, beige, black)
• a simple solid-colour dress
• soft fabrics that feel comfortable while holding baby
• sleeves if you prefer arm coverage
Try to avoid:
• large logos
• busy patterns
• neon colours
Simple outfits help keep the focus exactly where it should be — on your baby and your connection.

Absolutely not.
Newborns have sleepy days, fussy days, gassy days, and curious wide-awake days.
That’s completely normal.
Your job is simply to bring your baby and love them.
My job is to create beautiful photographs no matter what kind of day baby is having.
If this worry has been holding you back, please don’t let it.
Your baby does not need to be “perfect” for beautiful photos.
You simply need a photographer who understands newborns and knows how to adapt when babies do what babies do.
