What to Wear for Newborn Photos

You’ve booked your newborn session… and now you’re standing in front of your cupboard thinking, “I have nothing to wear.” The good news is: you don’t need a whole new wardrobe. Simple, soft, neutral outfits photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs — on your baby.

Here’s a simple outfit guide for newborn photos in a studio setting.

1. Colours that always work

For a soft, timeless look, choose:

  • Whites, creams, beige and soft grey

  • Dusty pink, blush, mauve, sage, light blue

  • Soft browns or stone tones

These colours suit almost every skin tone and work beautifully with natural newborn palettes (blankets, wraps, soft backdrops).

Avoid:

  • Very bright neons

  • Strong red, bright orange, harsh black

  • Big logos or busy patterns

2. What mom can wear

You’ve just had a baby — comfort first. Great options:

  • A simple, flowy dress in a neutral tone

  • A soft knit top with leggings

  • A camisole with a loose cardigan

Think “movement and softness”, not tight and restrictive. If you’re breastfeeding, choose something with easy access so feeds during the session aren’t stressful.

3. What dad can wear

Keep dad’s outfit simple and low-contrast:

  • Plain t-shirt or button shirt in white, grey, beige, light blue

  • Jeans or chinos

  • No heavy logos or bold stripes

Dad doesn’t need to be “dressed up” — he just needs clean, simple, solid colours that photograph well.

4. What siblings can wear

For toddlers and older children:

  • Neutral dresses, plain t-shirts, or simple rompers

  • Bare feet (often looks cutest in studio)

  • Soft hair clips or headbands (avoid giant bows that cover faces)

If you want to add a print, choose something subtle (tiny florals, fine stripes) and keep everyone else in solids.

5. Should we match?

You don’t have to match exactly. Rather think in terms of a colour palette: for example, cream + beige + dusty pink, or white + grey + soft blue. That way you coordinate without looking like you’re all wearing uniforms.

6. What baby will wear

Many parents love the classic wrapped newborn look, which I provide in studio — but you’re also welcome to bring:

  • A special onesie or outfit

  • A meaningful blanket made by granny

  • A simple, plain vest

Try to avoid stiff, fussy clothing or big collars that cover baby’s face when held.

7. Final checks before you leave home

  • Check for big creases on clothing

  • Remove hair ties from wrists

  • Empty pockets (no big phones or keys showing)

  • Quick lint/flake check on darker items

Once you’re dressed, let go of the rest. Your newborn session is about connection, not perfection.
