When Anja first reached out to me about booking a newborn photoshoot for her little girl, Nina was already over one month old. Since they don’t live in Pretoria, we planned the session carefully, and at two months old, Nina came into the studio for her very first photoshoot.
As a newborn photographer, I usually recommend scheduling sessions within the first 7–14 days after birth. This is the stage when babies are still very flexible, naturally curl up into those “squishy” poses, and tend to sleep deeply between feeds. At this age, it’s easier to capture those classic newborn photos in baskets, wraps, and cozy little setups.
By the time a baby reaches two months, things are often a little different. They’re more alert, less bendy, and don’t always want to drift into a deep sleep. Parents sometimes worry that it might be “too late” for beautiful images. But as Nina’s photoshoot shows, that’s simply not true — we can absolutely create a stunning gallery of memories no matter the stage.

For Nina, we had the best of both worlds. She was beautifully sleepy throughout her session — not something I see very often with older babies! This allowed us to capture a variety of wrapped, sleepy, and prop setups, while still highlighting her adorable little features that had already grown since her newborn days.
This session was extra special because it was Anja and Gerhard’s very first baby. Watching them hold Nina with so much love and pride was a reminder of why I adore newborn photography. These are moments you can’t get back — and preserving them through timeless portraits is a gift that families will treasure forever.
If you’re reading this and thinking you “missed the window,” don’t worry. Whether your baby is 10 days, one month, or two months old, I will work with you to create a gallery that reflects your family’s unique journey.
