One baby turning one is exciting enough. But two babies celebrating their first birthday together? Now that is double the fun!
This adorable twins cake smash photoshoot in Pretoria was filled with sweet smiles, curious little faces, beautiful portraits and, of course, two birthday cakes!
For their first birthday celebration, we chose a gorgeous sage green, white and soft neutral colour scheme. The result was a fresh, pretty setup that looked beautiful without taking attention away from the birthday boy and girl.
And before the cakes came out, we had some important portraits to capture!
Starting with Sweet Twin Portraits
I always love starting a first birthday photoshoot with a few portraits before the cake smash begins.
For these two little cuties, we started with matching denim dungarees. Little brother looked adorable in his white T-shirt, while his sister wore a pretty white top and matching bow.
First up was the brown leather couch against my studio’s brick wall. Simple, timeless and perfect for showing off those sweet little faces.
And that smile from little brother! He was clearly enjoying himself.
We then moved to the white bed setup for a few more portraits of the two together.
These clean portraits are such a lovely addition to a cake smash gallery. They give parents beautiful photographs of their little ones without cake everywhere.
Because, let’s be fair, the clean outfits don’t stay clean for very long once the birthday cakes arrive!
Two Little Personalities, One Special Birthday
One of my favourite things about photographing twins is seeing their different personalities.
They may share a birthday, but they are still two very different little people.
And that deserves to be captured!
During this session, I made sure we had individual portraits of both babies, along with their photos together.
Little brother gave us some wonderful expressions, from his big happy smile to those wide-eyed, curious looks.
His sister was just as adorable, with her beautiful eyes, sweet little bow and lovely expressions.
These individual portraits are especially important during a twin first birthday photoshoot.
As they grow older, each child will have photographs that are completely their own, as well as those special memories of growing up together.
A Beautiful Sage Green and White Cake Smash
Once we had finished the portraits, it was time for the birthday celebration!
For this twins cake smash photoshoot in Pretoria, we used a gorgeous combination of sage green, white and cream.
The backdrop featured beautiful floral details, balloon arrangements, greenery and large white letters spelling ONE.
The twins changed into their birthday outfits.
Little sister looked gorgeous in her soft green dress, while her brother wore a neutral outfit that worked perfectly with the colours.
And then came the best part.
Two birthday cakes!
I love how this setup gave both babies their own space while still keeping them together for their shared birthday celebration.
The soft greens and neutral colours also make this theme a lovely option for boy-and-girl twins.
It feels fresh, timeless and just the right amount of birthday fun.
Double the Cake, Double the Fun!
Now, here is something parents should know about cake smash photography.
Not every baby actually wants to smash a cake!
Some babies dive straight in, while others prefer to inspect the icing first. Some taste a little, some play with the decorations, and others are much more interested in everything happening around them.
And that is perfectly fine.
The goal is never to force a reaction. It is to let babies explore at their own pace.
For this session, both twins had their own cake, which gave each little one a chance to enjoy the experience.
Little brother explored his cake with his hands and enjoyed a few tastes of icing.
His sister looked absolutely beautiful sitting in her green dress, discovering her cake and enjoying her own little birthday moment.
I love capturing these natural expressions because they show exactly who babies are at this age.
Those curious looks, messy fingers and little moments of concentration are all part of the story.
And when you have two babies celebrating together, there is twice as much happening!
Why I Love Photographing Twins’ First Birthdays
Photographing twins is a little different from photographing one baby.
There are two personalities, two sets of reactions and sometimes two very different ideas about what should happen next!
But that is what makes these sessions so special.
I love being able to capture the twins together, then give each baby a moment in the spotlight.
It also means parents receive a lovely variety of photographs.
There are the sweet sibling portraits, the individual pictures and the fun birthday images with both babies and their cakes.
The beauty of a studio session is that everything is prepared before the family arrives.
The decorations, backdrops and props are ready, so parents can enjoy watching their little ones celebrate.
And because babies are wonderfully unpredictable, I always allow their personalities to guide the session.

Some babies smile, others look very serious, and some are far more interested in eating cake.
