Is My Baby Too Small for Newborn Photos? Baby Lia’s Pretoria Session

small baby newborn photoshoot pretoria008jenna d photography

Dad arrived, saying he only wanted one photo with the baby.

He ordered four.

I love when dads do that.

Baby Lia came for her small baby newborn photoshoot in Pretoria during her first week of life. She weighed just 2.7kg, which is on the smaller side, and she was an absolute dream in the studio.

Her mom, Jani, had booked the session all the way back in January. When Lia arrived in the first week of May, there was no last-minute panic. We simply confirmed the date, and everything was already planned.

That calm start makes such a difference.

If you are expecting and wondering whether your baby will be too small for newborn photos, this post is for you. Maybe you are worried the photos will look awkward. Maybe you are wondering if there will be fewer options. Maybe you are scared your baby will not “do well” in the session.

Let’s talk about what actually happens.

Is My Baby Too Small for Newborn Photos?

No.

A small baby can be photographed beautifully and safely. In fact, smaller newborns often curl up very naturally, which can make some poses softer and easier to achieve than with a bigger baby.

Most newborn photo anxiety is really about the parent, not the baby.

Babies do not know they are being photographed. They just need to feel safe, warm, fed, and comfortable. Size has very little to do with it.

Baby Lia was 2.7kg. She slept through her session, stayed calm, and allowed us to create a gentle mix of wrapped, posed, and family images.

The most important thing is not baby’s size.

It is safety, patience, warmth, and working at baby’s pace.

Baby Lia’s Small Baby Newborn Photoshoot in Pretoria

Lia’s session was calm from the start.

She arrived at the studio in Waverley, Pretoria during her first week of life. The room was warm and quiet, which helps newborn babies stay comfortable and sleepy.

Because she was still so new, she curled up beautifully. Tiny babies often still love that womb-like feeling, especially when wrapped snugly and handled gently.

Jani had also booked early, which made the whole process feel more relaxed. Instead of trying to find a last-minute newborn photographer after baby arrived, her session was already planned.

Newborn life is a blur.

Between feeds, healing, visitors, paperwork, and trying to remember what day it is, booking photos after baby arrives can feel like one more thing on an already full plate.

Booking while you are still pregnant takes that pressure off completely.

Why Small Babies Often Photograph So Beautifully

Small babies can be absolutely beautiful to photograph.

They are often still very curled up and sleepy. They usually enjoy being wrapped. They settle well in warm, cosy setups. They fit beautifully into simple newborn poses. And they photograph with the most delicate little details.

Tiny fingers. Tiny toes. Little lips. Curled-up legs.

That brand-new baby softness that disappears faster than anyone warns you it will.

With a small baby, I keep the session gentle and simple. I never force a pose. If baby does not like something, we change it.

The goal is not to copy a Pinterest pose perfectly.

The goal is to create safe, beautiful photos of your baby as they are.

That will always matter more.

When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?

The best time for newborn photos is usually within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.

During this stage, babies are often sleepier and more curled up, which helps with those soft, sleepy newborn poses many parents love.

But real life does not always follow a perfect calendar.

Some babies arrive early. Some arrive late. Some moms have a c-section and need a little more time. Some babies spend extra time in hospital. Some families only feel ready after two or three weeks.

That is why booking early helps so much. It gives us a plan, but still allows space to adjust once baby arrives.

What Happens During a Studio Newborn Session?

A studio newborn session is slow, warm, and baby-led.

That means we do not rush from pose to pose. We allow time for feeding, winding, changing, soothing, and cuddles.

At Jenna D Photography, the studio is based in Waverley, Pretoria. Everything is ready when you arrive, including wraps, props, blankets, and soft newborn setups.

You do not need to bring a suitcase full of things.

For most sessions, you only need the basics:

  • Extra milk if baby is bottle-fed
  • A dummy if baby uses one
  • Nappies and wipes
  • A change of clothes for yourself, just in case
  • Any sentimental item you arranged with me beforehand

The studio is kept warm because newborn babies are often photographed wrapped or in very little clothing. A warm room helps baby stay comfortable and sleepy.

Parents are welcome to relax while I work with baby. Some moms even enjoy the quiet because it may be the first time they have sat down in days.

And honestly, in the newborn stage, sitting down quietly for a few minutes can feel like a small holiday.

What If My Baby Does Not Sleep?

This is one of the most common worries.

Please do not stress.

Some babies sleep beautifully from start to finish. Lia was one of those babies. Other babies need more time, and that is also completely normal.

A newborn session is planned with extra time because babies are not robots.

They feed when they need to feed. They wake when they wake. They sometimes need a cuddle, a top-up, or a little break.

A good newborn session is not about rushing baby into sleeping.

It is about creating the right environment and then following baby’s rhythm.

Can Family Photos Still Be Included?

Yes, if you book a newborn package that includes family photos.

Baby-only newborn sessions and full newborn sessions are not set up in exactly the same way. The timing, posing flow, lighting, and preparation are different.

If you want photos with mom, dad, siblings, or the whole family, it is best to book the correct package from the beginning so the session can be planned properly.

This helps avoid the awkward “can we just quickly add one or two” moment on the day.

Because it is never really just one or two photos.

Family photos need time, space, posing, lighting, and a different session flow.

5 Tips If You Are Expecting a Small Baby

1. Book While You Are Still Pregnant

Do not wait until baby arrives if you can help it.

Booking early means your spot is planned, and we can adjust the actual session date once baby is born. This alone removes an enormous amount of stress from the newborn period.

2. Let Me Know Baby’s Birth Weight

If baby is very small, premature, or had any medical concerns, just let me know before the session.

It helps me plan safely and gently. It also means there are no surprises on the day.

3. Feed Baby Before You Leave Home

A full baby is usually a more settled baby.

Feeding before you leave, or arriving a little earlier to feed at the studio, can help the session start smoothly. It also means we spend more of our time on photos instead of starting the session with a long feeding break.

4. Do Not Stress If Baby Needs Extra Feeds

The studio is warm, and newborns often feed more often during a session.

That is completely normal.

We make time for it. There is no rushing here.

5. Trust the Process

You do not need to know how to pose your baby.

You do not need to bring props.

You do not need to worry about whether baby will “perform.”

Baby just needs to be baby.

That is enough.

Final Thoughts on Is My Baby Too Small for Newborn Photos.

Baby Lia’s session was a beautiful reminder that small babies can photograph wonderfully.

At 2.7kg, she was tiny, sleepy, calm, and absolutely perfect just as she was. Her mom planned ahead, the session was relaxed, and dad discovered that choosing only one photo is sometimes harder than expected.

If you are expecting and wondering whether your baby will be too small, please do not let that worry stop you from booking.

A small baby newborn photoshoot in Pretoria can be safe, calm, and beautiful when it is planned with care.

Your baby does not need to be bigger to be worth photographing.

They are only this tiny once.
